The SOAP Bible Study Method: A Simple Way to Grow in God's Word

7/22/20262 min read

Have you ever opened your Bible, read a passage, and then realized you couldn't remember what you just read? You're not alone. Many Christians want a deeper, more meaningful quiet time but aren't sure how to study the Bible beyond simply reading it.

One of the easiest ways to begin is with the SOAP Bible study method. It's simple enough for beginners but powerful enough to help you engage with Scripture every day.

What Does SOAP Stand For?

The SOAP method is a four-step approach to Bible study:

S – Scripture
Choose a passage and write down the verse or verses that stand out to you. Writing Scripture helps you slow down and pay closer attention to God's Word.

O – Observation
Take a few moments to notice what the passage is saying. What do you learn about God? Are there repeated words, commands, promises, or truths that stand out?

A – Application
Consider how this passage applies to your life today. Ask yourself how God might be calling you to respond, trust Him more deeply, or live differently.

P – Prayer
Finish by talking to God about what you've learned. Thank Him for His Word, ask for wisdom, and pray that He would help you live out the truth you've studied.

Why the SOAP Method Works

The SOAP method encourages you to slow down and interact with Scripture instead of simply reading through it. By writing, observing, applying, and praying, you're more likely to remember what you've learned and allow God's Word to shape your daily life.

The goal isn't to finish a certain number of chapters or fill an entire notebook. It's to spend intentional time with God and grow closer to Him, one passage at a time.
